It's the new trend in water heating that's fast gaining momentum in South Africa: heating your geyser by Heat Pump. Eco-friendly, Techno Heat Pump Water Heater cuts geyser heating costs by up to two-thirds! Techno Heat Pump units comfortably heat from 100 to 500 litres of water, while the largest Techno Heat Pump commercial unit is 38kW, capable of heating 1000 litres/hour, day or night, rain or shine. Water temperature is adjustable by remote control from 40° to 60°.
How is it possible for a Heat Pump to heat your water for only about a third of the cost of a normal electric geyser?
Very simply it works like this: when a gas is compressed, it heats up. (If you've ever pumped up a bicycle tyre, you'll remember that the pump got hot.)A heat pump has a motor which compresses gas in the Heat Pump, taking in heat from the surrounding air and then transferring all this heat to water. Result: the water is heated to between 40º and 60º (dependent on control panel setting). It takes far less electricity to run a motor and generate heat in this way than to heat water by passing electricity through an electric element.
Scientific tests have shown that, where in a normal electric geyser, one unit of electrical energy produces one unit of heat energy, with a Heat Pump, one unit of electrical energy produces between 2.5 and 3.5 units of heat energy.
